EXHIBITION

2022

VENUE

Shrine of Remembrance

YEAR

Peter was engaged by the Shrine of Remembrance to undertake the exhibition design for Defending With Pride: Stories of LGBTQ+ Service - an exhibition presenting the stories of LGBTQ+ veterans. Peter worked closely with the team at the Shrine during the exhibition development process, undertaking consultation with the project’s reference group that included stakeholders from Government and defence organisations.

The design brief called for an imaginative and resourceful use of the existing gallery assets, to create a novel scenography that incorporated video content, objects and textual material. Creative solutions to respond to the heritage constraints of the building were required. The exhibition was the winner of best temporary or travelling exhibition in the AMaGA National Awards for 2023 and highly commended in the 2023 Victorian Museum’s and Galleries Awards.

“Working with Peter on Defending with Pride: Stories of LGBTQ+ Service was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Peter is a great collaborator; he was very attuned to the nuances of the subject matter and the interpretation choices. He took the initial vision I had for the exhibition and exceeded my expectations in terms of the design.

This was a very important exhibition for the Shrine of Remembrance, the first of its kind for an Australian war memorial. There is no question that there was a certain amount of pressure, scrutiny and expectation placed on this project and its final form. The outcome is a beautiful, respectful, streamlined, contemporary, calm and contemplative space.

I truly look forward to the opportunity to work with Peter again in the future, he was thoughtful, intuitive, collaborative, conscious of project parameters and simply delivered a wonderful result.”
