DARK MATTERS is an exhibition created in collaboration with Arts at CERN and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics, presenting fourteen new artist commissions, each responding to the scientific themes of the exhibition: dark matter/s and the fundamental essence of life, the universe, and how so much of it remains a mystery to us.

The exhibition invites visitors into the unseen and unknown. Tapping into this desire to explore the hidden mysteries of the universe, the exhibition begins with an opaque and expansive twenty metre long wall, covered in a reflective black skin that hides the rest of the exhibition from view. In the middle of this large wall is a small door, opening onto a mysterious dark corridor

There are a number of recurring design motifs in DARK MATTERS, including the use of reflective glossy surfaces, suspended forms that levitate above the ground plane and an ultra-violet purple that permeates lighting, graphics and materials.

The hi-tech nature of nearly all the artwork commissions in DARK MATTERS encouraged a more unexpected and sculptural use of audio visual technology. Screens and projectors are suspended from the ceiling, speakers are concealed within walls and beneath floors, and linear lighting has been configured into a variety of shapes and colours.
